Can you travel during a pandemic?
The short answer and the good news is YES!
As we begin to awaken from the hibernation of the pandemic, many travelers are wondering and worried about the safety and restrictions of traveling in the post-Covid world.
Will we EVER get back to ‘normal’?
Although Covid-19 may lose its pandemic status in the upcoming months, it will then be classified as an endemic, meaning that it may continue to be prevalent within a specific region or population. For better or worse, the new normal, whatever that is, will require travelers to abide by the country’s specific entry criteria. In addition, it will be essential for all travelers to continue practicing patience, as traveling during this time will present unpredictable and unplanned travel challenges.
Before you board the plane, you may need the following at check in:
- Proof you received a COVID vaccination
- Proof of a negative COVID test
- Face mask
- Signed health declaration form
If you’re not sure of where to start, I recommend looking up the country’s COVID Protocols and getting familiar with their requirements, restrictions and rules before you book your travel.
Dos and Don’ts
Based on my recent travels, I have a few Dos and Don’ts to take into consideration if you are planning on traveling during the pandemic:
Do:
- Read, research and understand the country’s COVID protocols.
- Bring your vaccination card with you. Many restaurants and shops will require proof of vaccination prior to entry
- Find a face mask that is comfortable to wear for a long period of time. This mask lanyard has been a lifesaver for me when I’ve had to wear my mask for extended periods of time.
- Respect the country’s guidelines
- Practice patience. This virtue will definitely reap rewards if dutiful practiced.
- Be polite. People tend to go out of their way to help someone who is kind, polite and has a happy demeanor.
Don’t:
- Assume the rules don’t apply to you. Ignorance may be bliss, but it’s not a viable defense if you break the country’s COVID protocol.
- Expect a foreign country to comply with your personal religious or political beliefs regarding COVID. Remember, you are a guest in their country and are expected to follow their COVID requirements.
- Attend large crowded festivals where there is a greater risk of virus transmission
Good News!
The good news is that with a bit of research, thoughtful planning and patience, you can travel during the pandemic.
Keep Calm and Travel On!
